THE ARCHITECTURE OF FLOWERS is the 14th album by sonic terrain-exploring Australian ambient artist deepspace. The double album inhabits a surrealistic dream-like feeling, combined with a hyper light-filled clarity. Sun-filled detuned chords oscillate amongst strange backgrounds of unusual, uncategorized colours. Chords float upwards towards soft melodic currents above, both illuminated and obscured by soft yellow light from an unseen source. Gentle, vast and strange are the keywords to describe this release.

The guiding principle behind the music of deepspace was always to go into the deep spaces that are all around us, whether on earth, in space, in one’s mind, or distinct places, such as a desert or in a garden. The Architecture of Flowers explores the unexpectedly vast world of the latter. This album journeys into these green often passed-over worlds that are all around us. The micro world of flowers and plants, except in a way where the blooms are huge and fill the sky. Sounds that are not typically associated with our conception of flowers, are heard. What does a rose look like to a mite? What feeling would it create? What does floating pollen look like when it fills your entire sky? What does a butterfly as large as a mountain move like? Come on this journey where the small is made vast and fills your entire horizon. The music on this album is not like what you may expect of an album that proposes to be about flowers. The sounds are vast, strange and blissful, rather than tinkly and pretty. Hyper-strange floral landscapes are evoked and travelled to via the shifting lenses of the music.

The album has another unique feature in that the first half conveys this microscopic aspect, and the second half takes a step back and portrays the ‘mesoscopic’ or middle ground. In other words, we might instead hear the evocation of a quiet garden, arboretum, or an empty forested glade. The final part of the second part zooms all the way out to ‘macroscopic’ and sits far away from all this, maybe overlooking a vast clouded forest from somewhere up in the atmosphere.

Mirko travelled to isolated areas in Australia as part of making this album. He visited and explored Port Lincoln in South Australia, as well as the exquisitely rare wildflowers of Western Australia, 4000 kilometres away from his home on the east coast of Australia in order to capture the feel for this album, The Architecture of Flowers.

Mirko says “I got to a point where I was searching for ideas after THE BLUE DUNES. I was so proud of the feeling of that album and experienced a period of ‘I’ll never be able to get there again, as I couldn’t work out how I got there in the first place-itis.’ So I remained open to any ideas, and after months of starting to bang my head against the wall out of frustration at coming up with ideas that didn’t really excite me, the concept of the -architecture of flowers- and the idea of making the small into the vast, slowly emerged. I remember the feeling of sudden excitement when the idea emerged, and this provided the inspiration that I needed to start creating pieces that took me to this strange new place. I went and bought a microscope, excited at the thought of exploring a new place. I wanted to convey that world, unseen to us, through music. Sometimes a phrase or a concept is all you need to make the ideas bloom.”

Deepspace is Brisbane, Australia-based ambient artist Mirko Ruckels. His hypnotic, glacial, dreamy and atmospheric work is created with synthesizers, software and acoustic instruments such as bells, guitars and piano. When he was a little boy in Germany (he is German/French) he would slip into a reverie at hearing a distant lawn mower, church bells, passing planes, or the rumblings of far-off trains. This love of drones and ambient sound led to a wonderous moment upon discovering like-minded artists and listeners who also enjoyed atmospheric environments that evoke liminal moods and spaces. Ruckels discovered vidnaObmana and later Steve Roach; their unconventional approach inspired him to explore and create his own pieces. He says, “I literally had no idea how to make ambient music and just felt my way in the dark.” In 2006, Deepspace was born. Themes range from macro — such as space, underwater, deserts and science fiction imaginings, to micro — internal states and microscopic life.

Deepspace has released fourteen albums; two through Projekt Records; SUPERRADIANCE and THE BLUE DUNES, and twelve self-released. He has two 2021 collaborations with theAdelaidean; ADRIFT and ANTIGRAVITY, both on Projekt Records.
